5:ive 3:re aka Five Kat Tre Rap – PSM Vol.3 – Interview Series 2012
5:ive 3:re aka Five Kat Tre Rap
———-
Q&A’s
——–
What is your name, what do you go by?
My real name is Matt Freeman I go by 5:ive 3:re (five tre) or Five Kat Tre Rap
Where in the puget sound do you reside?
currently I live in Olympia, I’ve lived in Tacoma and Everett also.
Who currently enjoys your music the most?
I will always enjoy my music more than anyone else, but people that tend to really listen to the words and know what I’m talking about end up becoming good fans.
What figures outside of music do you look up to/respect?
Anyone that don’t give in to fame and fortune at the cost of losing who they are.
How much time do you invest in your music? How much time would you like to spend?
I used to spend 6 days 10 hours a day on my music while I lived in Everett. Now that I’ve moved I really only get to hit the studio probably once a week for 6-10 hours. I’m almost back to being capable of spending the ten hours a couple more days a week though.
Would you be open to do basement shows/house shows/outdoor venues?
Yeah so long as there’s a crowd there to support the acts.
Why do feel most northwest artist do not try to compete with each other?
In the Northwest artist are selfish which causes us to be divided. Everyone’s after the money making part of the industry and aren’t focused on the important part of jus getting their name out there.
How do your parents/co-workers feel about your music?
At first they say that it sounds like every other rapper who talks about money, drugs, and hoes, and in a sense my music contains the recipe of a rap song. Then after a couple times listening to my music people will text me and say “that bar is filthy” and say the bar. I write music for the people that use their brains when listening.
Do you see radio play/television in your future? Do you think it matters as much in the age of youtube?
I don’t see radio play, television, or none of that because I don’t want to be that known in a sense. If I can be known on the West coast and make enough money to support my family and not have to work a 9 to 5 I consider that a success in the industry. Everyone seems to be blinded by stardom and don’t realize the luxury of being able to perform and make music for a career regardless if your making millions or a couple extra thousand a year.
Would you like to still create/perform music 50+? How do you think hip-hop will be then?
This is like asking a dedicated graffiti writer if they’re gunna still write graffiti when they’re 50+. Anyone that is truly dedicated will answer yes to this question. Not to be rude or nothing I know you gotta ask the question.
Is it harder or easier for an upcoming artist to make a name for himself, comparing now to the 90′s?
I’d say its harder cuz it seems like everyone and their mom thinks that they can rap. With music you truly get out what you put in, if your putting in the effort and networking meeting people you’ll come up and be known, if not your left behind.
What 5 cds would you carry with you in the possibility of a zombie apocalypse?
Rapper Gone Bad-Mac Dre, 7 Day Theory-Tupac, Bullet Symphony Horns and Halos 3- Andre Nickatina & Equipto, The King and Mr. Bisquits- Andre Nickatina & Smoov-e, Khanthology- Andre Nickatina
Why did you submit this particular track to the puget sound mixtape volume 3?
I submitted “From The 253 to the 425″ to the mixtape because western WA is the 4253 and I wanted people to see that we can connect so long as people are willing to do it.
Do you have any shout-outs?
Shouts go out first and foremost my brother Easie who’s been making my beats for the past two years, Shouts to Subliminal Criminal, C-ward, Gregg Double and BNM, my homeys Boe, Titan, and Ben for supporting my music longer than anyone else. Thanks to my girlfriend for understanding that this is my passion and what I want to do. Shouts to Tr3 Nut up there in Everett and Mr. Grump Dogg. Shouts to anyone that don’t support MC DMK or any snitch for that matter. Shouts to Sic-ill for puttin this mixtape together

MAE – PSM Vol.3 – Interview Series 2012
Q&A’s
——
What is your name, what do you go by?
My government name is Michael Roberts Jr. I currently go by Mae and/or Maedali
Where in the puget sound do you reside?
I can say I’ve lived literally everywhere in the Puget Sound, but now Im living on Squaxin Island Reservation in Kamilche
Who is the inspiration for your music?
While inspirations are forever changing with me, currently Salvador Dali, Mae West, Gonzo music, other locals, Sun Ra, Charles Bukowski and Sonic the Hedgehog…..oh yeah,,Hunter Tompson plays a roll too! [ gonzo hint ]
What are the reasons you think so many people in the seattle area are collaborating?
My first thought tells me that the reason is because we have no ”face” yet, not a specific person but rather a visual impression as a whole. To me, once we have a reputation for being open and friendly with fellow musicians, it then opens a realm where we can “move” together.[the whole power in numbers thing] No real place strives when there is continous conflict as a motive I guess. In the older days of hip hop and even in rock music, the collabs were integeral parts of moving towards the apex of creativities within artists.
Where were you when Apple cofounder Steve Jobs died? How do you think ipods/mp3s have affected the music industry?
I was at work that day, oddly enough with my iPhone [haha] I can’t lie, the mp3′s have drastically improved music, while in the same breath, they have sprung forward this new trend of excessiveness. There are gems out there but the stuff you have to filter through nowadays is madd obnoxious. Anyone can record to mp3 now and send it off..meanwhile back then it took both money and dedication to press records, cds, whatever
When do you NOT include family/friends in your music, in your opinion?
I don’t include them unless I absolutely know that I need them, My family and associates are my ever efficient tool belt.
Why do you feel radio stations don’t embrace the locals in the area more, (especially daytime playlists) being that they have the most power to break an artist.
Because people that are in higher places then we are have already bought that air time.It would be so hard to walk in there and convince those guys otherwise.
What do you feel about the Youtube? Facebook? Twitter?
I am both entertained and disgusted. Im living in a digital world with analog veins
If you could headline/open in any major venue in the puget sound area, where would it be?
It would totally have to be the Tacoma Dome, and any art museum if they’d let me.
Why did you submit this particular track to the puget sound mixtape?
I wanted to make an early statement of myself for you guys, more importantly the folks who don’t know me.The song is truthfull and sarcastic as well. Its the best way to justify things that Ive done and will do. Look at that song as a testament to being comfortable, not ”shy” to break creative barriers, and being a creative lab rat for washington music haha.
Do you have any shout-outs?
I shout out every human that Ive built with this last yr. more importantly I shout myself out, simply because of how much Ive grown and matured in life, it feels unreal to be doing things that I never thought I’d do. Then again I told myself that I deserve it too [ good times] - I love people that I dont even know, so it makes compassion double hard.-

Cam The Viking – PSM Vol.3 – Interview Series 2012
CAM THE VIKING
Q&A’s
——
What is your name, what do you go by?
Cameron Torvik aka Cam The Viking
Where in the puget sound do you reside?
Tumwater, but I’m everywhere with the mobile studio.
What artists would you say have been your biggest influence on your current music?
KRS ONE, Afrika Bambata, Andre Nickatina, The Temptations, GrandMaster Flash,Tech N9ne, Moody Blues, Lupe Fiasco, Led Zepplin, Abom Kid, Living Legends, Pink Floyd, MGK, UGK, Brotha Lynch Hung, Lost Soul the E-Mo Kat, Macklemore, AR Mastermind, Immortal Technique, Adele, People under the Stairs, Josh Rizeberg, Rage against The Machine, Zion I, Awall aka 2Piece, Goodie Mob, Royce da 5’9, Mae, Bonobo, Wu-Tang……..& every terrible song I hear on the radio!!
There’s plenty of talent in the NW. What do you think a puget sound artist needs to do in order to gain a record deal?
Thats the Golden Question, If I knew the answer I would have one myself. But my plan at this point is to network through shows and collab tracks here in the NW and build a proper reputaion and friend/fan base here, and try and setup or jump on a tour that travels at least down to cali and have the proper websites and product for that one show that you catch the proper eyes/ears and they see what you got.
The key for that theory to work is too bring everything you got every show and every verse whether there is 5 people or 500 listening. It’s really not the goal yet to get signed in my world though, I really enjoy every step of this Hip Hop world, and I jumped in late so I might not ever get signed Im fine with making music with no pressure or deadlines or someone telling me to change my lyrics and beats.
Where is the best places to get people to hear your music? (ex; live, online)
A Live show with the Gonzo Family!!! I promise after seeing our passion and energy in the flesh people will understand how much we love what we do, and with all the music out there I think its very hard to be heard unless you build a friendship with an artist/fan, and my favorite part of a show is after the performance when I get a chance to thank everyone and chop it up. Im the only Cam The Viking so you can google me!!
www.soundcloud.com/camtheviking
www.reverbnation.com/camtheviking
Would you ever bring your grandparents, young children to one of your shows? What would be their reaction?
My sisters love seeing me perform and I love it when they can make it. My mom wants to see me perform but I worry about lyric content and also some of the other performances and their content. But my whole family supports me and loves that It makes me very happy. We do the We Out Here Showcase once a month because it is All Ages and we tone down the lyrics for the little Gonzos.
How do you think people would respond to northwest music going nationwide?
With a refreshing sigh of relief that at least some people are still following the basic elements of Hip Hop. I really hope Macklemore can do it honestly, love him or hate him his lyrics are real and he is starting to break through….I just hope he stays true I can see what the evil of fame and money can do to an artist.
Why did you submit this particular track to the Puget Sound Mixtape?
First off it was an honor to have Awall aka 2Piece show interest in my music. And even though its a “Mixtape” I made this beat myself and I get great feedback on it. Plus I made a video for It to give people a chance to see how we work in the studio. http://youtu.be/Pms5sieMlOw
Do you have any shout-outs you want to give out?
Sic Ill for putting on the mixtape, Mae, Abom, Lost Soul, Mastermind, Nuvo, Skrilla, Awall, Rizeberg, Rob Spruill, Greg G, Mike G, Castro, Thunderchief, Shao Sosa, Illizm, B Dub, Enas Nimi, Yak Nasty, Serious Mak, J-Money, NW Royalty, The Krisis, Tak Patron, DJ Iceman, DJ Skrewball, DJ No Mercy, DJ JBones, Alex Rossiter, Bud, BLM, Bonniewood Kings, & My girlfriend Jamie!!

Who are your favorite producers in todays music?
I still love the main producers from the eighties…Dr. Dre,Timberland,Jermaine Dupri,Eric Sermon, RZA…. etc….These guys know how to put albums together ….its an art , and it is not for everyone but this era of producers were grand….if you know what I mean…
How would you describe your music?
Raggahop….is what I call it ….rap/hiphop/melodic raggae a sound acquired from the 80′s but developed and transfused for the present as well as the future……my music is timeless and as we continue to progress ….I dont fret too much over how rapid hiphop changes because any way you slice and dice it….Solo is always in the mix.
What do you think breaks an artist the best? Long Grindin, Money, Quality of music, Quanity of fans?
Money…..most artist are hustlers, and money really isn’t an issue if you grind on the street but most of these artist also get caught up due to the street whisperers ….you know what i mean…..so as they continue to rack up records …it becomes more difficult for them to focus on the music they are working so hard to finance.
Where is Sir Mix at, do you think? I’d love to pay for a show?
Yeah,…thats my G…its been a while since ive heard of him in our area here in the Puget Sound but his handy work is everywhere…his proteges are doing Big things most notably…E-Dawg. WE the streets pay attention and we follow everyone and stay in tuned with the current affairs in the region Shout out to E-Dawg and his camp. Westcoast stone, Don-p, Sonny Bonoho, Sunny Red, Lebowski…and Team Loyalty…..Ya digg!
What do you think about the effect todays music has on the youth?
How did music effect you growing up? When I was growing up the artist out then were Gods, I was in Africa in the late 80′s Early 90′s and artist like Snoop Dog and craig mack, 2pac , Biggie, naughty by nature were Super Heroes to us….Djs’ were running the African music scene because we looked up to them as our saviors for providing current music,Radio stations had to wait 6months to start playing the latest music, but the Djs with American connections got the latest music in 2 weeks….so you see how we had to grind and stay close to the djs with overseas connections to get the latest music….that was before the internet era….
Do you ever check out any local music? What is your opinion?
Are you Kidding me? I stay on top of the local music scene!!!… I am an underground artist, i have been in the northwest underground scene for 15years…I paid my dues…..but we are still pushing you digg!!! The puget sound area has the best crop of underground artist in the game right now,its so ridiculous how many talented artist are out here and this is a hint to all reps looking for artist to develop or throw money on or even work indie deals with You would find a host of diamonds in the roughs out here…. no joke.
Why did you submit this particular track to the puget sound mixtape?
“Getcha Getcha” is a battle track or diss track if you want to call it that…and this is just a track I felt shows the true essence of hip hop and an indication that hip hop still lives out here and we here doing it….shout out to the alliance battle league and all the battle leagues out there you digg!
Do you have any shout-outs?
Shout out to Sho-me Records, E-Dawg and his camp. Westcoast Stone, Don-p, Sonny Bonoho, Sunny Red, Lebowski…and Team Loyalty..Tommy Boi, Kid kuci,.Big Treal, Money Maintanin camp, Jail Bird, J-wen and the BirdBoyz, Blesssyde records, The general Wojack and Criminal Nation, Big Serg, Caution, Nu empire, Big SIN, Johnny family,Jacky Jack, Supa Sam….Johnyy Walk, Platinum Reign crew, Sci-fi, Big Heath, Jay Highway, Uptown ,Young Native and his whole camp, Motamouth Jones and the list goes on and on …..Ya digg!

LIFIK – PSM Vol.3 – Interview Series 2012
LIFIK
Q&A’s
——
What is your name, what do you go by?
Names Zac. Zac Pier. Code name: Lifik.
Where in the puget sound do you reside?
All over really. But, my hearts in Kent and that’s where I am at the moment.
Do you think rappers will ever start taking up instruments? Is it necessary?
I think it’s healthy for ‘em to produce a lil music of their own. You know, maybe get down on a lil piano or hit a drum or two. I don’t think it’s necessary to pick up an oboe or a trombone and join a marching band though.
What do you think neighboring places such as California, Vancouver feel about the northwest music scene?
They love our shxt.
Where in your music career do you think you’ll be five years from now?
I don’t know. I trying to break into producing though. We’ll see where that leads…
When do you think we’ll see more hip-hop/rock line-ups? Are the scenes too divided?
I’ve always thought of it as taboo. It’ okay to sample rock music, but to go full on rappin’/buttrockin’ makes it hard to keep fans interested from both sides of the fence. In other words pick one genre and kill it.
How was your Christmas? Would you ever make a holiday rap album?
My Xmas was good. The kids all got what they wanted. As for a Xmas rap album I would rather put on a Rock album.
Why did you submit this particular track to the Puget Sound Mixtape?
It was hard to pick because ALL of my songs are amazing really. But I felt this one had tremendous energy and stood out from the rest. I cant help but head bang.
Do you have any shout-outs you want to give out?
Burger King! You had out that California Whopper out for a bit, then you took it away. I ain’t mad atcha. I just want it back!

GREG DOUBLE – PSM Vol.3 – Interview Series 2012
Greg Double
Q&A’s
——–
What is your name, what do you go by?
- Gregory Vincent Goucher / Greg Double
Where in the Puget Sound do you reside?
-Lakewoood for now
Who’s CD/Mixtape/Mp3s are you bumpin right now, mainstream or underground?
-General Wojack, Abom Kid, Shao Sosa, Illizm, Rizeberg, AR Mastermind, SoundShop Northwest (j money the hitman), Spice 1, Andre Nickatina & The Jacka.. i think thats all in my glove compartment
What were the first musicians that inspired you to make music, rap or otherwise?
-Sir Mixalot, NWA, Spice 1, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Snoop Doggy Dogg
Where is all the Mobb music, do you think the swag/techno/dance faze is on its way out, or just beginning?
-there is still some good westcoast mobb music out there, youve just got to know the right producers and mc’s.. i get alot of beats from california producers myself because i need and want that mobb sound in my projects.
i spose the dance stuff will always be around, it was booty jams and bass cds back in the 90′s i think it will live on, but morph into the next trend or fad or whatever u want to call it.
When will we see a westcoast tour featuring Blue Nose Music?
-hopefully sooner than later, weve got connections from bellingham to to california.. but trying to get everyone on the same page is tricky. id say by 2013 well be traveling the coast rocking venues!
How is making music for money, different from making music from the heart?
- idealy, its the same thing. but realisticly, not so much. i feel that when youre making music that you as an artist dont enjoy; once youre writing to target a specific demographic, that the art just went out the window. youre now producing a product to do a job, and bring in money.. your artistic muse has become the money you are trying to earn, maybe that accounts for how hip hop n rap culture is so obsessed with money..
Do you still work with Mac Wayne & Uncle Moo, who were featured alongside you on the first Puget Sound Mixtape?
- no, long as ive done this ive seen alot of artists come and go.. im sure theyre out there getting in work but just on different pages.
Do you think race is still a significant factor in hip-hop or do people just want good music?
-i dont think its a factor to a real artist.. for the most part, people that want to hear good music dont care what color or sex you are. and those are the people i work for!
If a new artist were to ask you where he should start to make a name for himself, what would you say?
-i have always tried to work with younger cats, show them how to get started recording and writing in song format & facilitate a young rap mind as much as possible.. but i spose now i would have to pass on the wisdom ive recieved from my role models.. id say
- 1st) do have a real career to fall back on.
- 2nd) do keep an open mind, positive attitude & network
- 3rd) dont try to be a 1 man army. you need allies to be successful.
- 4th) dont waste time & money in studios making albums.. focus your energy, money and everything on a few SOLID, WINNING singles, and create videos to spam on social networking sites, online musician & fan forums & everything else to create a buzz for yourself..(might get u a sponsor to record that full length LP)
im sure there is a million things u can say, things u learn as you go.. but i think thats a good start..
You run your own label [Blue Nose Music] How is it to operate as record label head & artist?
-it can be difficult as far as releasing my own projects.. i never put my artists on the back burner for my own project, & its taken me years to barely release my Ego Centric album.. but if you stay about your business, dont screw around with side BS, its not so difficult.
Why did you submit this particular track to the puget sound mixtape?
-This is a song we did recently, with my young homie 5ive 3re, who teams with his brother Easie & makes beats out in olympia.. i loved the beat soon as i heard it, we all sparked on the topic and it showcases almost all of our Blue Nose Music squad on one track, as well as combining our veterans with our apprentices. Cant Handle The Night.
Do you have any shout-outs?
-Mike G, Castroni, Thunderchief, Tactical, 5ive 3re, Iballz, Abom Kid, all my BlueNose fam! Cam The Viking AR Mastermind, Lost Soul The Emo Cat & All the Gonzo Family, Josh Rizeberg, Tak Patron, all Six Guns Music, Illizm, Shao Sosa & BDub, Tony Snow, Emoe Mob Marley, Goph, Z Dub, PTP, AKA, Alias Alias & the hotbox network, Sic Ill, Koomaniacs, Unconfined Promotions & The new umbrella, my family & friends who support me

DJ HAZE – PSM Vol.3 – Interview Series 2012
What is your name, what do you go by?
DJ Haze
Where in the Puget Sound do you reside?
Downtown Seattle
Who inspired you to become a producer?
Dr. Dre was the first established producer that had really made me look at the art of beat creation. Scott Storch was along that same thought. Specifically the Still D.R.E. beat, but so many of the tracks off of The Chronic: 2001. The first time I heard those instrumentals, I knew I had found something to take with me.
What impresses you about the local music scene? What disappoints you?
I’m impressed by the community of the underground scene in Seattle. It seems like the few dudes around here that have established a reputation in town as Hip-Hop artists are closer with their fans, and upcoming artists than in other places.
A big factor that disappoints me about the local scene is how everything is at a 21+ venue. Being under 21, I find it very hard to network with people in the industry. As well as do shows, and DJ at events. I understand why it is that way, and it’s like that in the whole region. But when I lived in NJ, being under 21 wasn’t as big of an obstacle in doing shows and going to events.
Where can we see DJ Haze live or online?
Well me and Mista Gee just had a show at The Republiq in Seattle (Dec. 7th), and I like the people who run that place, as well as the atmosphere. So I will most likely be doing more shows over there.
As far as online, I was just played on Headstrong Radio www.headstrong-music.com (Thursday Night), and currently in rotation on Peekaboo’s Playhouse. ww.peekaboosplayhouse.info/
How does northwest music compare to the national average in your opinion?
Well speaking on Hip-Hop; The Pacific North-West can be pretty white bread at times, I feel like there may not be enough fans for the Hip-Hop genre to really thrive locally. The same goes for talented Hip-Hop artists, there just isn’t as many here, as there is in other American cities.
But on the flipside of that, The NW is huge for Alternative Rock, Jazz, or Folk music.
How important is getting on mixtapes, line-ups to upcoming artists in Your opinion?
Man, that’s about as important to your career as drinking water and breathing oxygen is to your life. Even if you feel your above the particular show or mixtape, go n let everyone know how much better you are than the rest.
Why did you submit this particular track to the Puget Sound Mixtape?
I laced the homie with my 3 track EP, and I stand behind each of those tracks 100% because out of the 20+ songs we made over the last year, we only want to release the best of the best. People don’t forget about a weak debut.
Do you have any shout-outs you want to give out?
Well obviously S/O to the homie Mista Gee, who wrote and performed the lyrics over my tracks on our EP and this compilation.
And to Sic Ill for putting us on this tape.

DJ ICE MAN (Host of PSM VOL3) – Interview Series 2011
DJ ICE MAN (HOST OF PSM VOL. 3)
———-
Q&A’s
———-
What’s your name, where in the puget sound do you reside?
I am known as dj iceman and i live in lakewood
Who or what inspired you to become a DJ?
My uncle A.D. is the one that first inspired me to dj
What year did you decide to take your craft professionally?
I got my first setup in 1982 and di my first block party in 1983 i became a full working dj in 1989
Where is the R&B scene out here, how come there are less singers performing live?
I really dont know where the r&b scene is lol i only know of one singer and thats violet i just think there have to be more venues out here for that
When do you think lyrics will be more focused on than the music, do the people really want that anyway?
I think is is a focus it just depends on who you listen to.
How important is working the crowd?
Its VERY important! if you cant motivate a crowd then you lost half the battle
What do you think of the south sound having a DJ pool system with hits/mp3/vinyl from the local artists? Do you think it can be done?
I think its a great idea not only for artists and djs bot as a gauge for history. i think there are a lot of classics that have been forgotten because they have not been cataloged and kept up on
You’re a transplant from New York, how did they do local music different; live, promoting, radio?
Theres a lot more people in new york so a artist dosent have to go far for support take someone like nas,hes from queensbridge projects there is under 200,000 people in queenbridge alone!! so that fanbase is built in.then it will travel to other boroughs so its a lock from jump its just a matter of working the grind and getting the right connect.
Many people don’t know you also have a background as an MMA fighter and coach, what skills do you think that adds to your craft?
Its really helped me with my focus.
What do you say to an artist who comes to you with a demo at a live show?
If im at a show the best i can do is listen to it when i get home. but im not in the position to break an artist big out here like a super sam or dj deniero. but if i like it i will definitely support.
Do you think hip hop is evolving or devolving?
I think a little of both the quality of underground hip-hip is still at a high level but its the mainstream that has saturated the market to such a degree you have to really search, or should i say want to search for quality hip-hop. you have radio stations today playing the same 10-15 crappy songs all day but most people instead of trying to find the alternative will just sit and listen to the radio to the point where they get to like what they hear after awhile.
Where and when can we catch you live currently?
I dj wayback Wednesdays and fallback Fridays at E&Js in lakewood, 3rd word Thursdays (the third Thursday of every month) at hells kitchen Saturdays from 1-4 at rumrunners for the A.B.L. battles and when weather permits,Sundays at the graffitti garages (9th and Broadway) for the northwest mc leauge cyphers.
